As ratified by the States and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson, then-Secretary of State, the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution reads as follows:  “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

Tragic events in Umpqua Community College in Oregon have brought the topic of gun control and firearms ownership to the forefront of political discussion.  In my own family, my spouse called my sister in Oregon to make sure our nephew was not attending Umpqua Community College.
